5 Types of Books to Give Your Man

Looking for the perfect book to give the man in your life? With these five categories, one is sure to be a hit with your guy. In case you need ideas for Father’s Day.

1. Autobiographies or Biographies

This one you need to personalize more for your husband, boyfriend, or whomever you may be buying for. For my husband, I would buy the Steve Jobs book. Not just because he works in the tech field, but because Apple is one of the few companies that make accessibility a priority. Plus Steve Jobs was a bit nutty; I bet his biographies would be interesting to read.

Other suggestions: For the sports fan – When The Game Was Ours by Larry Bird and Earvin (Magic) Johnson, Jr. For the foodie in your life, Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain

2. Books That Make You Think

The author that I would recommend is Michael Lewis. Some of his more popular books are Moneyball and The Blind Side, mostly because these books have been made into movies. He has some other great books about finance and world politics like The Big Short, Boomerang, and Flash Boys. My husband has actually read many of Lewis’ books and raves about them.

Other Suggestions: About the crisis on Wall Street – Too Big To Fail by Andrew Ross Sorkin. For the health conscious or for someone who is trying to eat well and wants to learn more about the processed food industry – Salt Sugar Fat: How The Food Giants Hooked Us by Michael Moss. For those interested in having a more efficient workday – The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferris.

3. Thriller Novels

Both my husband and brother-in-law have read and raved about many of Daniel Suarez’s books, so based on that alone I would buy any male in my life one of his books. The fact that he has some that make a series and some that can be read as a stand-alone makes his books a great choice.

Other Suggestion: Anything by Dennis Lehane, I would especially pick the series that follow Kenzie and Gennaro, who are private investigators in Boston. One of those books was even made into a movie, Gone Baby Gone, which is 4th in that series. He also wrote Shutter Island and Mystic River, which are two books that I personally loved, and were made into movies. As well as anything by Dan Brown, he has written Angels & Demons and The DaVinci Code.

4. Novels

When most people think novels, I think they might think of “chick lit”, but there are plenty of books that you can gift a man that he will enjoy. Tom Clancy is a favorite not just for my husband, but also for my father. He was the writer of the Jack Ryan novels; there are 9 in total, but also known for many other novels.

Other Suggestions: One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, this book tells a tale in a way that anyone would want to read it. The Stand by Stephen King, obviously Stephen King could fit into the Thriller category, but he is one of the best novelists in my opinion. I feel like you can’t ever get enough of Stephen King.

5. Books to Read Together

Many of the books listed here can be found in the other categories as well. My husband and I have read many books, especially series, together. He likes to read on the train during his commute, and I like to unwind with a book before bed. It’s fun to be able to discuss the books we are reading together!

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins is the book we are currently reading. Other books that are thrillers that I would recommend would be: Gone Girl or Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. (Editor’s note: just buy the entire Gillian Flynn collection while you’re at it. They’re all good!)

Other Suggestions: The Maze Runner series by James Dashner, some may not be into the series types of books, but I find that the dystopian type setting can be appealing to men and women. You could also try: The Hunger Games series or The Divergent series. Plus all of these are being made or are already made into movies. Read the books together then have a date night to watch the movies together!
