I just read this today - I agree with your thoughts about the collective voice. It was disconcerting at first. I don't know much about the Japanese relocation, and am interested in learning more. It is rather shameful, in my opinion, that it gets ignored as part of our history - almost as if the government is admitting the fact that it made a horribly ignorant decision.

All in all, I liked the book and am glad I read it.

The number of books at our house is a conversation starter, too, Janin!! They are everywhere, in every room. Even the bathrooms have bookshelves :) Our collection of religious non-fiction and historical non-fiction is always an interesting topic, too. But for this small list, we picked the things we touched on most during our recent holiday entertaining, plus a couple that always seem to come up. it was a hard list to make!

Usually, just the sheer number of books openly on display at our house is a conversation starter. But we've also had them start over embroidery and other how to books, the small collection related to calligraphy and illumination, the complete works of Poe, the zombie survival guide, and the Sword of Truth series (:

I liked this one a lot - read it over break too. I liked the first person plural perspective that brought so many disparate voices together.
